Wednesday Wants: Feminine & Professional Work Wear

You may have noticed that in the majority of my wear-to-work posts (examples here, here & here) I am wearing pants. This is because, in general, I have felt more comfortable in my career playing down my femininity. I work in a heavily male dominated environment. There is often just myself or maybe one other female in a courtroom full of men.

The past few weeks though I have been thinking a lot about this and have been wanting to add more feminine work pieces to my wardrobe. I often wear skirts and dresses in my free time and so, while I still intend to dress very professionally, I don't want to "hide" my femininity.

All of that is a very long winded way to say that this week's Wednesday Wants are clearly all about feminine wear-to-work items. I want every one of these pieces so much!

The rest of this work week is going to be absolutely nuts for me, and so I want to let you guys know that I will not have a post up this Friday. I *hate* deviating from my post schedule (... have I mentioned how type-A I am!? haha) but this week it just has to be done. Be sure to come back on Monday for another post! And follow along on instagram & twitter as I'll at least have some time to be staying in touch on there!

Style Inspiration: Spencer from "Pretty Little Liars"

Today I am bringing you another installment in my "style inspiration" series. With this series I re-create work appropriate looks worn by celebrities/ characters. Be sure to check out my earlier posts on Anne Hathaway & Amal Clooney if you missed them!

So I have to admit to you all that one of my biggest guilty pleasures is the TV show Pretty Little Liars. I know, i know, it's the epitome of a teenage drama, but it's just. so. addictive. The fact that all 4 main characters have unique styles with amazing wardrobes doesn't hurt either!

I've really loved Spencer's style- especially in the most recent season. The character of Spencer does work chic so well. When I first saw this casual look I knew i needed to recreate it!

I didn't have the exact peach cardigan - but I really loved the depth that the black trim brought to the look. So, I went with a blouse with black trim to re-create a similar effect.

How do you think I did?! Do you like this look for work? And, most importantly, am I the only young professional who watches pretty little liars?! Let me know in the comments below. The remaining outfit pictures (and outfit details) are below.

Spring Florals & a Polette Giveaway

I've been a huge fan of Polette glasses for a long time, (you can read my first review of them here), but these ones take the cake. They are definitely my new favorite accessory! The light gold frames are perfect for spring. Polette is an online optician that offer's designer frames from $6.99-$49.99 with anti-reflective and anti-scratch coated lens options as well.
As you know from last week's post, I love to make my work looks more spring-like with the top I choose to wear. This Kate Spade top is feminine and I love the big floral print. For work I wear this with a blazer on top; but it's great to bare some shoulder (and get some sun!) over the lunch hour.

Today I am giving one lucky reader the chance to win a pair of glasses or sunnies from Polette! Enter below for your chance to win any frames of your choosing (open to US & Canadian residents 18+, for full general details about my rafflecopter giveaways see this post)

Have a great weekend everyone! I've got a fairly low-key weekend planned, unfortunately I have to work a fair bit to get on top of my case load for work next week, but I definitely plan on getting at least a bit of sunshine relaxation in!

5 Easy Ways to Look More Stylish at Work

how to dress better at work
*see this outfit post here
Given that my niche as a fashion blogger is work wear, I often get questions about how to keep work wear from looking boring. Today I decided to talk about 5 easy ways you can look more stylish at work.

1) Add a Pop of Color
fashion tip add a pop of color to your outfits
*see this outfit post here*

It is easy to fall into the monotony of black and grey work wear. Adding one simple pop of color instantly updates your entire outfit. Go for a bright pencil skirt or large handbag if you are bold. If you are more hesitant, start small - add a clutch or a bright pair of pumps.

Below are some of my favorite picks right now to add a pop of color:

2) Make a Statement with your Shoes

You can instantly update any work outfit by adding a killer pair of shoes. This is great for women like myself who work in a very corporate environment. No matter how restrictive your industry is in terms of creative expression the most standard interview suit looks more stylish with a chic pair of pumps. Below are some great options:
3) Add Layers

If you are stuck in the rut of a blouse and a blazer think about changing your look with layers. There are a million ways to incorporate more layers but some easy ones are to add a sweater on top of a button down (and under a blazer if need be), to had a sleeveless blazer or vest, or even to style a shirt under a dress. Here are some great options to layer with:

4) Borrow from the Boys

Break away from standard women's work wear and incorporate a traditional menswear item. Paired with women's work wear not only does this make for an ultra fashionable look, it also exudes power and confidence. A great thing if you are in workplace that is dominated by men. The menswear pieces I find easiest to incorporate are bow ties, 'smoking slipper' style foot wear and suspenders. You can also be bold and go for suspenders or a pocket square. Below are my top menswear picks:

5) Combine Casual & Ultra Conservative

If you are in a work environment where you can be more casual or creative, try pairing a conservative suit with a graphic tshirt. The look will still be work appropriate but will be extremely stylish. Just be sure to pick a graphic tee that is work appropriate! Below are great options:

Spring Colors at the Office & a Giveaway!

It can be hard to incorporate spring colors into your work wear when so many of your base pieces are black or grey. To bring spring into your work look go for light accessories and roll your sleeves if, like me, you have to wear a blazer! I also love to incorporate spring colors via my tops. I love the peach color of this top and the peter pan collar makes it stand out.

I also love my new phone case! I created a custom iPhone case with Case App and had a blast doing it. As a travel addict, i wanted a map of the world and I wanted to make it personal. I decided to put a heart over each of the places that have a piece of my heart. Some of the people I love the most in this world live far away. Every time I look at my phone case now, I get to smile thinking about my loved ones (& the great places they live!)
I get to give away a coupon code to one lucky reader for $40 to Case App - enough to make your own iPhone or laptop case! Open to residents of the United States and Canada, 18 years or older. For full terms and conditions see this post. Good luck!

Wednesday Wants: Must Try Spring Trends

There are so many fashion trends to try this spring - from the 90s, to culotte pants, to paper-bag waists. This week's Wants are a round up of items I love that are right on trend for spring. I hope you enjoy them!

My personal favorite trend is probably the paper bag waist. It's comfortable & flattering, and can be casually dressed down or dressed up for work. That, my friends, is the definition of a 'functional' trend! I would love to know what trends you are most looking forward to wearing this spring. Let me know in the comments below!

Style Inspiration: Anne Hathaway as Jules in "The Intern" (Look 2)

recreated look anne hathaway in the intern
Today's entry in my Style Inspiration Series is another look inspired by Anne Hathaway as "Jules" in The Intern. I have re-created one of her outfit's before (here), but I think that her wardrobe is the best "young professional fashionista" wardrobe I have seen in a movie. I want every outfit worn by Anne Hathaway in this movie magically transferred into my closet!

What I like about this look is that it serves as a great reminder that the bold combination of red & leopard print can work for a professional look if styled correctly. Keeping the accessories to a minimum and wearing a menswear style blazer tone down the red/leopard and create an excellent work look.

What do you think of this work look? Would you wear red & leopard to the office? I'd love to hear your thoughts! My main tips on wearing a combination of red & leopard print to work are:

1) Keep your accessories to a minimum

2) Keep the leopard print to a smaller item (shoes or a handbag are perfect)

3) Look for materials and fabrics that are high quality to keep the look professional

I hope you all have a great start to your work week. It has been so nice and warm here in Vancouver so I plan on wearing spring looks to work all week. If you follow along on instagram I'll make sure to post some of them.
